One of Dad's memorable accomplishments is life was his driving career. From Dumptrucks to loggers, bulk taters to long haul semis, he was all over the United States. He had the traditional Chauffeur license issued, before the days of CDL. Just a few years ago he went in for cataract surgery. After the surgery, he reported to SecOState for a license renewal. Passed with flying colors. As the Clerk looked over his papers. She made the observation " Mr Dyer, I see here that you've had your license over 65 years." Yes Ma'am. " Mr Dyer, you've never had a ticket". Yes Ma'am. She said of all her years in service to the State, she'd never seen that.
Dad had a lot of stories to tell. He had a full life to brag about. His big Brother Ken signed for his driver's license at 14 years old. His first job was driving a dump truck for Dyer Construction in the gravel pits of Montcalm County. 'Bout 1952, a family member donated property in Crystal, and the Dyer Business went to work building a racetrack. Dad was driving and dumping rich red clay for the banked raceway. As anyone knows, the best way to pack red clay is to drive heavy hot trucks on it. SO o o o . . . Teenager in a dump truck on a race track. Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, the very first race at Crystal Motor Speedway was NOT Imca Modifieds, it was Dyer Construction Company sponsored dump trucks !
Prayers to the family
Larry was a quiet man who said a lot. He was a leader. He will be missed.
Larry Dyer was a fascinating gentleman. I so enjoyed sitting and chatting with him about his life experiences. His love for his wife and family was both amazing and obvious. He was very proud the military service provided by his family. He was truly a member of our country's "Greatest Generation". He will be missed.
Larry did a lot behind the scenes for a lot of people.
