Dad wanted to share these memories of his sister, Pauline.
I remember Pauline working right next to our dad, me, my brother Wayne, and Majail forking hay in the field to haul to the barn. We worked together in the bean fields pulling beans and cucumbers for days at a time. During thrashing time, we would pitch them into the thrasher. Our dad worked us day in and day out on the farm like slaves. The only breaks we got were when we went to school, and after church on Sundays. Ma, Pauline, & Majail made sure all us boys had clean clothes to wear. Theu worked very hard doing this. Ma had a couple scrubbing boards and the girls job was to scrub too. Ma got a wringer washer when I was about 8 yrs old, so they didnt scrub no more, and they were happy about that. Pauline played the violin, and I always enjoyed listening to her play in the evenings after the chores were done. Pauline & Majail got dolls that cried one year for Christmas. Wayne & I tore her doll apart to see what made her cry. Boy did we ever get in trouble! We used to go ice skating on the pond in the back field, near where the hog houses are now. I could rollar skate, but not ice skate. Pauline usually went sledding with a group of us on several different occasions. Pauline ans the rest of us always enjoyed these breaks from work in the wintertime. My sister Pauline was a wonderful person. Being the oldest of all the kids, she had a lot of responsibility. She was always kind, unless she was mad at me and Wayne for doing something we shouldn't be doing. Pauline was a great sister, and I'm happy she was one of mine.
~With love, your brother Vernon
