Sherry and Wayne were our landlords for nearly eight years. My now-husband and I were just two young, scared kids with a baby on the way when they took a chance on us, and I will be forever grateful for that. During those years, we had the privilege of getting to know both of them very well. They treated my little family like their own, especially our son.
Having such warm, generous, caring, funny, and genuinely good people in our lives during such a frightening and uncertain time made everything feel so much less overwhelming.
One memory stands out in particular. My son and I were spending time with Wayne and Sherry at their house, enjoying their pool. My son, who was about five years old at the time, decided he was going to go down the water slide. Thankfully, he was wearing a flotation device, but I completely panicked and rushed to where he went in, while Sherry remained calm. The moment he popped back up, he had the biggest smile on his face and couldn't stop talking about how awesome it was. As I was trying to put my heart back in my chest, Sherry matched his excitement completely and cheered him on. To this day, I honestly don't know who was smiling more—my son or Sherry.
It was such a simple moment, but it perfectly reflected who she was. She had no obligation to love and care for my son the way she did; she did it simply because that was the size of her heart. There are not many people left in this world who consciously choose to love and care for people they have no responsibility to, but Sherry was one of those rare people.
Sherry will be deeply missed, and the world will be a little dimmer without her in it.
Wayne, I know it's a cliché thing to say, but I truly mean it: if you need anything at all, please don't hesitate to reach out. We love you, miss you, and are keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
