Theda Mae Houghton's Obituary
Lakeview-On Thursday, October 22,2020, Theda Mae Houghton, age 90, of rural Howard City, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family. Theda was born on October 24, 1929 in Marion to Frank and Mina Decker, the 7th child to their large family. She grew up in the small town of Millbrook, often sharing happy memories of playing dolls with her sister, wading in the creek near the depot and of helping her mother with household activities.
In 1947 Theda graduated from Blanchard High School. It was there that she met her high school sweetheart, Dennis Houghton. They took their vows of marriage on March 15, 1947, and together they set out to make their life together. Theda and Denny's union was blessed with 6 children. Together they worked hard to build a life for their family. They moved often and lived in many houses, but no matter where Theda always turned any house they lived in into a warm and loving home.
On September 17, 1972 Theda was baptized and dedicated her life and service to her God Jehovah. She was a member of the Howard City Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, and she remained loyal and faithful to that dedication up to her death.
Theda was a faithful, capable wife to her husband, a loving mother and grandmother to her family. She had countless friends and will be remembered as hospitable and caring, always happy to share anything she had. Anyone that came to her door was invited in for a hot cup of coffee, a meal, a game of cards or scrabble or to just sit and visit awhile. Theda was loved by many and will be missed by all that knew her.
Theda is survived by her six children, Steve (Lorrain) Houghton, Marsha Shurlow, Richard Houghton, Karen (Denis) Teeter, Susan (David) Rasmussen, Julie Houghton; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dennis Houghton; her parents; siblings; sons-in-law, Dennis Shurlow and Joseph White; daughters-in-law, Evonne Houghton and Karen Houghton; grandchildren, Denyse Willoughby and Keith Shurlow.
On Saturday, October 31, 2020 from 1:00-5:00 PM Theda's family will host a small gathering at her home near Amble for any friends or family that would like to stop by. On the same day there will be a virtual memorial service via Zoom, by invitation only.
